Hi,
I dont claim to be an expert but do know a little about these fish, I think they are amazing and would love one my self. There are several different types of Arowana's the most common being the silver. These fish grow quickly and like most predator fish they will eat what ever they can fit in thier mouths in the line of live bait, but untill they are big enough to eat thier tank mates I'm sure they would be more than happy to eat what ever you drop in!
As for keeping convicts with this fish I'm sure it'll be fine untill it grows big enough to eat them.
The variable info you have found on them is very common when aquarist talk about big fish, the info and knowledge that has been gained by keeping these fish is in considerable short supply compared to other fish, as lets face it the amount of aquariums big enough to house these kinds of fish are in short supply and are usually public displays....
When buying a fish I tend to settle on the biggest measurement as that way I can be sure that I can provide adequet accomadation.
I know thats a pretty useless reply but just trying to help xxx
