My first, and unexpected Oscar. Help?

Postby YamiYume on Sun Oct 01, 2006 8:10 pm

Ok... I'm not an Oscar expert, nor had I planned on getting one so soon. >>

I work at a Wal-mart in the pet department, so I do know some about Oscars. Well a customer brings in a young Oscar from our new shipment (came in on Friday) in a small sandwhich tupperware. Poor thing had to lay diagonally to keep fully in the water. Anyways-I digress-- So he says he doesn't want it anymore-- can we just put him back in the tanks. Well, we can't becasue of policy, don't know if that fish has something now. So. He said he diddn't want it anymore it killed his Pacu's and tinfoil barbs, so he diddn't care what we did-- flush it whatever, But I couldn't bare the idea of flushing the poor thing down the drain. :/ So now I have this small (maybe.. 2-3 inches) Oscar sitting (temporarily) in my spare 10 gal. Till I can get my 55 down here. So... I know very little bout them, really. Just, can be aggresive, we give them a couple of Rosy reds, and a cube of Tubifex worms once a week and flake food the other days. So hmmm... Anything anyone else feels like throwing in. X.x I'm not even sure what kind he is.. he has no orange on him like most of the others we get in. just dark green with light green spots on him. I'll try to take a picture of him later.

Hi, and welcome to the forum (and to Oscar slavery)!  Your ten should be OK for a few weeks.  For food, I recommend a good quality pellet food sized appropriately so that he can eat it.  You don't need to worry about feeders.  Some folks use them as treats, but as I'm sure you know, there is a possibility of introducing disease.  You can experiment with treats -- you have good access to many choices.  I use FD krill, mealworms, the occasional unwary bug, etc, but a good pellet should be your staple.  Oscars aren't really aggressive fish if kept in a large enough tank.  Here's a post from our FAQs:

They're really fun fish!  Enjoy!

i agree with  what  was  just  said if u  get it some shrimp pellets for the man everyday food with all the other stuff as a treat it should be just  fine and if the pellets are too big then  just  snap them in  half its easy 1 other thing  now that you  own an oscar  you will think  they are the coolest fish  going  with their personalities  each 1 is different  gl and enjoy
