Can anyone help me figure out how to sex my Oscars? I have 3 full grown Oscars and can see distinctive differences, but extremely unsure. I have raised one from a about 2" to now 10", and I the others are about 5 years old. I took them from someone who couldn't take care of them any longer. I would love to breed these beautiful babies, but can't if I don't know which is which. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any good quality pictures/movies? Did you read all the sexing info on this website? Also do a "search" on this BBS and search for "eggs" or "spawn" , "sex", "sexing" , "genital" papillae , ovipositor etc.....i remember posting some details before which may not have made it to the cichlid-oscar section.

I have read everything on the BBS, and I've searched numerous sites, all the details given are great, but my Oscars have so many similarities. When I think one may be male I compare to the others and well I don't know. There are great differences, but signigicant similarities that leaves me doubtful. Is there a sure fire way to sex. I'll search the BBS again, and see what I can find. As for pictures I have none at this time. Thanks for your help.

Well, only "sure" way is venting, and even that is not "sure" if you're not experienced. If you can though, try to take some pictures and scan them. As far as searching on this BBS, try searching for, "genital papillae" or "tubes", "ovipositor", "venting", "dorsal", etc....I do have some video tape footage which I never seem to have time enough to digitize and post on the net.
