Breeding Feeders?

Postby Diaz on Thu May 25, 2006 6:53 am

I know that it is really bad for my tank to feed my o's feeder fish. However, I just really like to see them eating feeders. Its like the Discovery channel :) :) Everybody has said if I want to feed them goldfish to breed them myself. I was just wondering if anybody could tell me how hard that is or how I would go about starting a breeding tank. Thanks ahead for any info or advice.

If you breed your own feeders, it's no longer "really bad" to feed them to Oscars -- the major issue is diseases brought in by the feeders when you buy them. If you breed them, you no longer have this problem. You do, however, need to feed Oscars a varied diet, so if you use Feeders continue to feed them other things, too. The lack of a varied, interesting diet is one of the precursors to HITH disease.

Most people I know breed either Millions fish (called Guppies) or other livebearers like Mollies for feeders. My sister fed her Jack Dempsey entirely on Guppies she bred in a 20 gallon tank nextdoor to her big aquarium. You can set up and cycle a ten or twenty gallon tank -- use plants, filtration, heat, everything you would use in a "show" aquarium -- and just get a herd of male and female Guppies. Keep the temp a little warm (80 to 82 degrees F) and the h#rny little Guppies will do the rest.

Thanks man. I think I might try to set up a tank like you spoke of. I already feed my o's a bunch of differnet stuff, (shrimp, pellets, bloodworms, beef hearts) and I will continue. Thanks for your insight.
