Mating - Jag & Flowerhorn?

Postby monski on Thu May 04, 2006 5:43 am

I just moved my Flowerhorn to the bigger tank where my Jag and 2 Janitor fish are in.

They seem to get along well. But i noticed something funny. My Jag is acting crazy as if he's with a girl for the first time in his life. He's shaking his head and following the FHorn all the time.

I also noticed that the FHorn has lost most of its marking on the side except for the central mark. Here's a pic of the Fforn when they were seperate.

If they are indeed pairing off, then I just discovered that I have a female flowerhorn. If not, Id just like to understand what's happening... Thanks for any input.

Mating - Jag & Flowerhorn?

Postby vince on Thu May 04, 2006 6:16 pm

hi.

i also have the same experience, when i have a problem in my pair of flowerhorn (male red pearl dragon and female kgm) were i decided to place my female kgm in a neighboring tank own by a male jaguar. at first i was so worried that the jag might kill the fhorn, but instead the jag started to follow the kgm and start pressing the side of his body against the kgm. i decided to set up another tank and separate my kgm from the jaguar. actually, up to now i'm still thinking what there fry will look like if they happen to breed.

I really don't know anything about fish... But I'd like to know how to spot a male or female FH though. Here are additional pictures of the fish. Can you give me tips on how to tell?

I don't keep or like hybrids,so I'm not up with the current trends on all of them but.

Trimac based hybrids /"flowerhorns": (the type yours is)
Usually females have a black spot in the middle of the dorsal
males don't.
Venting also works.

Vieja based hybrids (or FF,flower fish) can be guessed at by finnage or venting works

check this page ,it's easier when pictures accompany, the explanation.

For larger fish, you don't need a magnifyig lens though.
