Breeding Cichlid question

Postby Thorsmom on Fri Mar 10, 2006 7:18 pm

Hi all, we have a question about our male and female convicts. They are currently on their second bunch of frye. We have 5 of the original bunch and they are growing fine. The rest were used for feeder fish. They have since laid eggs and we have more frye. The difference between this time and the last time, is that the male was so good the last time. Now he's a menace. He is literally torturing the female. We just moved him out of the tank and in to our cichlid tank....that should be interesting.....however, we did not have much choice. He was chasing her, biting her, and not letting her eat. He has not bothered with the frye, they are still swimming around, etc. Our question is this.....what the heck happend? I was bragging about what great parents they are, and now he's turned into freak fish. We have been enjoying watching the whole process, but this is just strange. thanks for the help.

Breeding Cichlid question

Postby Barb Okla on Sat Mar 11, 2006 11:49 pm

Ah males!! what to do when they act..weird...
I'm sure that wil come back and bit, but Males sometimes just want to keep spawning..I always had to remove my male convict as he did just what yours is doing..So that was a good choice..
Shame thou, as you have really watched them interact with the fry. are they all in the same tank, the other fry too?? I am surprised as this should have made him chase them off and protect the nest, NOT pic on her..More cons in the tank would work to keep him busy protecting and not be so abusive to his mate..But that might lead to more cons later... Best to leave dad with the others for now.. Sorry, not much help.. IF I could understand what a fish thinks, I would CHARGE for my reponses!! And we know thats not going to happen!! :D
