For a while, there are any number that would be OK. However, once your oscar hits about 6 or 7 inches, you'll very likely run into aggression issues with another cichlid in there. A pleco would be OK if he has somewhere to hide when oscar becomes a grouch. A second oscar might work out, but 2 O's in a 55 = close attention to feeding, filtration, & water changes to keep everyone healthy. I kept an oscar in a 55 with a severum, and they were good buddies until the 6-inch "terrible teens" stage was reached, at which point the oscar started bullying the severum unmercifully. Put them in a big tank, and presto -- friends again! A lot depends on the individual personalities of the fish, but in a 55 your margin for error is reduced.

Im looking at getting a FlowerHorn Cichlid to put in there with him...

Its about the same size as my o, so i think they should get along good

I was considering putting a 4inch Red Devil in with him but the shop owner said that my o would get picked on to much... is that true?

Recommend against both of those, esp in a 55. Too aggressive and better equipped with teeth for your O to deal with. About the only thing you can keep with a red devil is gravel & water.

I agree with dan, plus they are man made hybrids that should be boycotted IMO

What about a pink convict or maybe a jack dempsey....

The Red Devil is out of the question but unless i can find something better than a Flower Horn... Im gonna get a small flower horn to put in with my 3.5inch oscar

There is plenty of decor and rocks in the tank if you were wondering....

Whats your opinions

I've always had good luck with the Dempsey/Oscar combination. Jack Dempseys, like many other Central American Cichlids, need hiding places (like rock formations, overturned flowerpots, etc.) to feel secure. The only thing is that you'll need to find a Dempsey that's about the same size as your Oscar or he might just be expensive Oscar food:( -- I think you should avoid the Flowerhorn, like Tony sez. Also, avoid the Red Devil, they grow quickly and can become ferocious. A Red Devil will eventually kill your Oscar -- so keep him "out of the question" --. --Mark:cool:

I know that these aren't cichlids but, you can also look at getting silver dollars or a couple tinfoil barbs. Do yourself the favour of getting them 3-4" long. The reason I say these is because they are very quick and fairly hardy. Tinfoil barbs can get very large though, Up to 16" wild probably 10-12" in a tank so keep that in mind. Where as silver dollars get around 6".

Excellent suggestion, especially Silver Dollars. They are always good tankmates for Oscars.:)
