Longer or Thicker- Which has the bigger advantage?

Postby Scorpi-O on Wed Jan 11, 2006 1:53 pm

Now with the thread "subject" like that, what did you think this thread was gonna be about????? :wow!
Oscar's size in relation to dominance/pairing, of course!:D
(LOL! let's see how many hits this thread gets!)

As I posted in a previous thread, our 2 Oscars are starting to do some grown-up fishy behaviour (the 69'er standoff with Tail Shimmies, then Mouth biting & locking)
Usually it's Rajah chasing, pushing &/or biting Blondie outta the way. In the last 24 hours though, Blondie has been fighting & biting back, even chasing Rajah many laps around the tank.

2 Oscars:
Rajah- 6.4" (TL) x 1.75" thick (pectoral fin to pectoral fin) x 2.85" H (Base of Dorsal fin to belly). {Yeah, he's a porker!}
((Not as long, but much thicker than Blondie))
Consistenty higher contrast colors with brighter Oranges & dark Blacks.
More agressive/dominant :sumo:- usually pushes Blondie outta the way to be first on food. Regularly bites Blondie on or near tail.
Quite hand/net shy. :tongueout
I believe Rajah is possibly a Male.

Blondie- 6.6" (TL) x 1.55" thick (pf-pf) x 2.65" H (BDF-B)
((Noticably longer, but nowhere near as bulky as Rajah.))
Consistenty lower contrast colors with very little Oranges & usually showing Silver/Grey rather than Blacks)
More :yesmaster passive - usually assumes submissive posture when challenged by Rajah.
Not hand/net shy.
I believe Blondie is possibly a Female.

I'm including a pic.

I prefer not to stress the fish when I don't have to.
I haven't vented either fish - it would be the first time for me, so I'm not sure if I'd make a correct ID even if I did. Yeah I understand the oO & OO reference.
Yes, I know it's impossible to truly determine the sex without venting, but would anybody want to make even a rough guess if I'm right?
and which do you think has the bigger advantage when push comes to shove - a Longer fish or a Thicker fish?

Wow, You ask the big question eh? Is thicker better than longer LOL. In my opinion you are gonna have to vent them to find the sexes. As for who will be able to push around better, I believe that it comes down to mass. who do you think is heavier. And it also depends on personality. Blondie may be fighting back just because she's tired of being bullied.
