I'm wondering if I've finally identified this disease properly.
I think it was NTD - Neon Tetra Disease.
Situation :
30 Rosey Red feeder minnows put into 10g quarantine tank.
Symptoms :
1st - slight spasmodic action & small discoloration of scales/skin usually at base of dorsal fin &/or tail,
2nd - more severe swimming difficulties, large discolored patch of scales/skin usually at base of dorsal fin &/or tail,
Final - gasping, paralyzation & death.
Timeline :
Hour 1 - 30 minnows, 1 seems to be twitching occassionally with discolored patch starting to show beneath dorsal fin.
Hour 3 - 4 infected.
Hour 6 - 2 minnows dead, 4 more infected.
Hour 12 - 8 dead total, 5 more infected
Pimafix & melafix added
Hour 16 - 12 dead total, 6 more infected
Hour 18 - 18 dead total, 5 more infected
Hour 24 - 23 dead total, 6 more infected
Hour 30 - 30 dead total,
Medication had no effect.
All fish displayed the exact same symptoms before they died.
All Dead fish were disposed of.
A 75% water change was done on the 10g tank.
48 hours later, 12 Red-Eye Tetra added to tank.
Within 24 hours, all tetras were dead from same symptoms.
All Dead fish were disposed of.
100% water change, including water inside filters.
The tank was scrubbed with hot water/bleach solution.
All filter parts were also thoroughly cleaned. Media was discarded & replaced. Media from known safe Tank was used.
Substrata was removed & discarded. Gravel was replaced with same from same known safe Tank.
Another 16 Red-Eye Tetras added.
Monitored for 30 days - no symptoms present in any occupant.
This all happened almost 2 months ago, but I've continued to look around & investigate to see if I could find what it could have been. As I posted near the beginning, I think it was NTD.
Anybody agree with my assessment?
YES, this is exactly why I refuse to use "feeder" fish.
If I'm gonna give an occassional treat of fish to my Oscars, I'll pay the extra for a "higher quality" fish and ALWAYS quarantine any new aquisitions.
