My Oscar is sick

Hi Kev,

Hard to say, try different kinds of food. Might want to treat for bacteria/parasites etc....try some general anti-biotics. Hopefully the antibiotics will be effective. Might want to move fish to small 10gallon tank to do the treatment etc...

Joe, Thanks for info. I went to local pet store and it looks like a parasite "Hole N Head". I treated tank. I left both Oscars in tank just in case the other had it too. Thanks for help!

Hi Kev,

If it Really is HITH(hole-in-the-head), the best thing is to have best water quality possible(many good sized water changes). Basically to eliminate ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and give good oxygenation etc....if you use activated carbon you might want to remove it for a while. But again, i'm not really convinced it's HITH that you have, so by the book anti-parasitic treatment is good anyway....good luck

I would also use salt in your aquarium to treat it and when you clean your aquarium. A water conditioner also comes in handy.

My two oscars just went through this whole, sad ordeal. I made sure I got the water really good before I started treatment. Then - at other's suggestions - I used Hex-A-Mit, raised the temperature to 80-82 degrees, and added aquarium salt. After a week they are much better and like themselves again. Just make sure your water is really clean before you start treatment. I also was told not to change the water during treatment because that would reduce the meds. So, I really cut back on feeding to make sure the water was kept clean. Looks fine after 6 days - full treatment. Going to give it a change tonight.

Good luck. Don't wait too long to treat them. It's really sad when they don't feel good.

You can take your water temp up to about 86F and oscars will feel comfy. I've had them survive 98F, but please don't try it, well unless you've got them in your cooking pan Image
