Bigger tank??

Hi all...got a question. I'm sure that some of you have read that we have 2 convicts that have frye. (They are doing excellent, good parents, very cute kids...) My question is this...we currently have them in a 10 gallon tank. All appears to be fine with this, the cons are alone, no other fish in there. The male is 2.5" and the female is 2" (approximate). I have been reading that a 20-30 gallon tank, with the 30 being ideal, is what is needed for breeding cons. Have I made a huge mistake putting them in this 10 gallon? Like I said, all seems fine in there. The water quality is pristine, they have one large cave decor, and 1 small log decor, both used to hide in. It does not appear over crowded, but I dont want them to be unhappy down the road. Please let me know what I should do. Thanks....

A 30 gal would be ideal for breading cons, just because as the fry grow you will find spaces cramped in there. You can use the 10 gal for a holding tank for some of the fry as they grow. But beware that cons are the rabbit of cichlids and they won't wait long to breed again and you might find you have 2 broods on your hands before you know it with no where to house them. Keep in mind that the fry make great feeder fish. Hope I helped and good luck.

Thanks for the info....funny you should mention the "breed again" statement. Lo-and behold, we have eggs this morning! Guess that bigger tank is coming sooner then later. We are breeding them for feeder fish. I forgot to mention that. I guess we will have more then enough to feed our numerous fish!!! :D Thanks again. We'll keep ya posted on our "growing family"...LOL

It's amazing how quick those little buggers can pro-create.
I hope every thing goes good with the move into the new tank.
