New African Cichlid

Postby Thorsmom on Sun Jan 22, 2006 8:57 am

Hi all...here's the deal. We bought a bright yellow and black cichlid the other night. His primary color is yellow, with black stripes. He was in a tank titled "assorted african cichlids".....I was wondering if anyone knows what this fish is really called. I do not have a picture at this time due to computer trouble. He is approximately 2 inches long. I hate when LFS's just throw a bunch of fish in a tank and call it "assorted"....Give me the NAME! All the fish looked like him, but were different colors. Some were all yellow, some were white, some were blue. Can anyone help? Sorry about the "no pic" thing. Thanks alot...Thorsmom.

Usually "assorted africans" are either "zebras" ( Maylandia,/Metriaclima or Pseudotropheus depending what or where your checking) , hybrids or occasional just a let over,so it might be a hard guess without a picture.

try checking google for

Pseudotropheus crabro and Pseudotropheus flavus as a start.

Again sounds like all "Zebra cichlids" just different species.

Good luck finding out what you have.

what direction are the stripe going(side to side or up and down). You might have a psuedotropheus kenyi(up and down) or a melanochromis aratus (side to side) if he has a funny looking nose he could be a type of labiatropheus.
