HELP!!! convicts had babies!

Postby artuck on Mon Oct 10, 2005 7:30 pm

We got 3 fish all the same day.
I zebra convict that was real red on the belly. the lady at the store said that it would have babies, but seems to have a pointed tail looking more like a male. We got a pink cichlid that has always 'hung out' with that zebra and then a Jack Dempsey.

Well we have babies. I don't know if I have 2 females?
They were both guarding the fry but lip locking alot. I put the screen in to keep the JD away as he would eat the babies at every chance although the 2 convicts have taken to stalking him. LOL

I have the zebra with the fry and took out the pink one. So if they are 2 females, and one 'came' pregnant what do I do? What if they really are a pair and I just split up the family unit? Which is the girl??? The pink one has the rounder fin. But I thought that the zebra was girl!!????

PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!!

:D If they are a pair, you might want to keep them split up. Convicts are the "breeders" of the cichlid world. At present, you have no need to panic, in regards to the fry, well since they are convicts, its not like you can sell them to an LFS, so if you don't want to have tankfulls of convicts, I would keep them seperated.
Otherwise you will have to dispose of the fry somehow. Shame as it is, with convicts thats how it goes.

and that's why i got rid of mine. don't get me wrong, i thought they were a really nice looking fish. the whole reason why i got them was because i thought they looked cool being really dark black. then they started mating, and over ran my tank. so i let the fry get older, sold mom, dad, and all of the femals (so i thought). few months past, and i have a nother litter of fry. after those got older i finally said NO MORE.

if you don't want the babies the best and most humain way to get rid of them is to freeze them so that they are deprieved of oxygen:shock:

We too have babies. We bought a male and a female, had them together for 1 week. She laid eggs during that week, and now we have frye. It's awsome to watch them being parents. They are the only fish in the 10 gallon, so we dont have a predator problem. We decided that we would breed them for feeders. This was decided after we bought feeders from the local LFS, and our Oscar died.....we think that had something to do with his demise....so, home breeding is the way we decided to handle the "rabbit" like behavior. :D
