We have eggs!

Postby Thorsmom on Thu Jan 05, 2006 6:52 am

We have 2 black convicts, male and female,....obviously, LOL. We just noticed that they have eggs! We bought this large decor with 3 openings and the male was quite busy in there digging the substrate, down to the glass. However, she chose the large piece of slate that is being used as a back drop....So excited!!! It is awsome to watch them.....if one eats the other stands guard. They are alone in a 10 gallon, so they dont have any other fish to worry about. They are 2" and 3" respectively. I cant wait to see frye!!!!! Just thought I'd share.....I'm gonna be a grandma!!! :D

We have eggs!

That's awsome, and well done. You might want to take the parents out when the fry hatch because one of them might start eating the fry. The reason I say this is because I had the same thing happen for me in a 10 gal and the female started eating the fry which in turn made the male rage:mad: and try to kill the female:eek: . My guess is that the tank was too small for her to be comfortable in.

We have eggs!

WOW...that's too bad! Fortunately, our parents seem to be doing an awsome job. The eggs hatched the other day, and we have 100+ little ones. It's been amazing watching them! Mom turns pure white when anyone comes near the tank....she and he, have been hearding the little ones for days now. She brings them out of the cave in the morning (lights on) then back in the cave at night (lights out). If one strays, she immediately sucks him in and spits him back with his siblings. So very cool!!!! We have been pulverizing cichlid flakes and watching the parents "feed" the young. I'm totally amazed at this process, and cant wait to see what happens next. We are keeping a close eye on mom and dad...just to make sure no one gets "angry, scared, or mean"......Thanks for the advice. We will keep ya posted!!!!
