Painting near the fishtanks??

Postby Qserv on Thu Jan 17, 2002 8:57 pm

I need to do some painting around the house near my fishtanks etc, and i am not sure wether this may effect or kill the fish from the fumes?? Has anyone had this problem before? I dont need to move the tanks to do the painting and it would be a real pain in the backside if i had to move them because of fumes.

Thanks,

Mick.

Actually I've used some pretty strong stuff to where I could hardly breathe and didn't seem to bother the fish so just cover the tank with a blanket or something. You should be fine.

If you put an air pump feeding air into the tank from either outside or from a "fume free" part of the house you can help ensure they have good air getting into the water... then just cover the tank well to keep as much of the fumes as possible out of the tank... this can be potentially dangerous, but should be easy to avoid problems

you should be fine,,,, glad they mentioned the air pump,,, thats the most important thing IMO...as far as the paint,,, shouldnt be a problem as a lot of saltwater set ups have the back of the tank painted, and for myself,,,, I bought one tank that had woodgrain trim,,, well I needed black,,, so I masked it well and spray painted it,,, just went to home depot,, nothing special....its not a problem,,,, just always bear in mind that you are putting air in the tank,,, I keep my air pump in a separate room as my wife and I are both smokers dont need my fish coughing up a bunch of phlem....
