White strands in tank

Postby Nemo18 on Sun Apr 30, 2006 5:29 pm

Recently, my oscar tank has what looks like white cotton threads in the tank, whether floating or attached to my oscars. It doesn't look like ich. Could it be algae, worms, paracites. I hve no idea. please help if you've ever had this problem and how to fix it. Thanks

they could be protein worms that show up when there is excess food in the tank. im not sure but i dont think they will harm your oscar but i would suggest doing a water change.

Ummm, longlivehavoc, I think ya mean "Planaria", not "Protein worms".
Yeah they're pretty common when the tank has been subject to overfeeding situations.
The good news is they're harmless.
The bad news is they make the tank look horrible.

To get rid of them (or at least get them under control):
Stop feeding the fish for 5-7 days.
Do a thorough gravel vac & 75% PWC every day or every other day.

That should do it.
Hope it helps.
