ok the cheap you should be able to use with some carbon in it,,, ust make sure you rinse the carbon like I said and use a layer of filter media over it(carbon)

Garden crickets could be the problem whether it's that they had some pesticide on them or a parasite. I don't really think it would be the heat, I live in a semi-dessert where it gets 35-40degrees celcius in the summer and never had a problem with the water getting too hot for my fish. Keep up the water changes and make sure there's enough oxygen getting into the water. What foods are you feeding him?
