OSCAR HELP NEEDED

Postby michael on Mon Aug 20, 2001 3:21 pm

Hi People,
Im new and need some help. Have a pair (I think) of tiger Oscars. One has laid eggs 4 times. always white not brown, they get eaten after 24 to 36 hrs. O's never fight been together about 2 years, both defend eggs from other fish and my hand (ouch). took eggs away once (on slate) added meth blue but still got fungus. could I have 2 females ? less colourfull one lays eggs other one fans eggs with (his?) fins. They laid eggs again today, this time I have covered tank (wife thinks we could be disturbing them). Should I feed them or not.
Would love to see some baby oscar fry, ive been succesful with port acaras but Oscars got me scratching me head.
help please b4 they eat the eggs again.

If you take out the eggs, try to have a continuous water current flow over the eggs and plenty of oxygen pumped into that tank. This and the antifungus meds should help.

sounds like the eggs are not being fertilized if they are always white.
Beige is the colour of fertilized eggs.
Your male may be sterile or you have two females

OSCAR HELP NEEDED

Yea, that's possible just as Tony said, but don't give up to soon, there's hope. I thought I had a sterile male for a while, until finally I had fry fromt the pair. Sometimes they fight TOO much and the male maybe doesn't get around to fertilizing them.(When i moved them from the 55gallon to the 65gallon is when the eggs hatched) A 65gallon is really the absolute minimum for breeding oscars in my opinion.

OSCAR HELP NEEDED

Postby michael on Tue Aug 21, 2001 3:31 pm

Thanks for your replys. Ive decided to leave the eggs with the parents for now, (seems a bit cruel to take them away). Ive turned up the water flow, this will also increase the temperature slightly. both parents have eaten today and im hoping that if their not hungry then they wont eat the eggs. my wife said she thought the eggs looked pink rather than white, unfortunately it was dark when I got home from work and I dont want to turn the lights on for fear of disturbing them. The eggs are a little over 24 hours old now, still being protected by both oscars. Im pretty sure I have a pair because its always the same one that lays the eggs. question > how long can I expect to wait for the eggs to hatch if they have been fertilised ?

One final thought " shame you cant buy oscar milt in a bottle ".

They should hatch in 3-5 days....speed depends on water temp...
