hey everyone.

i was just at a bbq at my aunts and they have a 20 foot by 15 foot pond (its huge) and im very impressed that a family with no fish keeping knowledge are doing really well on looking after their fish.

even down to regular water changes, good filteration, good levels of stocking at a sensible rate and so on.

either way, the were asking about what fish they could get for their monster sized pond (im very jelous, trust me):p

they had already been sold a sturgeon, being told that in a few years itll be worth thousands, that itll give caviar and itll eat all your blanket weed.

1. bo**ocks:mad: these fish while yes, get huge are not good average pnd fisht. their a carnivore, they eat pond life like water lice and such. and are.. frankly doomed from the start. they swim inches from the surface, basically starving due to lack of food (after all they eat weeds right?) within inches of any cat or child willing to grab them.

2. cavaiar?so ive just bought a fish that is going to grow to 30 foot? and its also one of the rarest fish int eh world? bargin eh?

3. turns out they wont even eat normal fish food (wheat or ceral based) so theres fish are pretty much doomed from the start

many years ago my dad was also sold two sturgeons under the same false pretenses and at 40 pound a go i think its sickening that fish stores (reputable ones in my opinion) are still pedelling thiis.

they also said that the store tried to sell them a channel catfish. i was appauled at this, these as i remember are big evil predetors.

is it still that bad for new fish keeprs? being sold ever fish under the sun

just needed to rant that one out

Channel cats are readily available over here in shops, as well. Think it's a spin-off of the aquaculture business -- raising them for food. Problem with fish like this in ponds is that, lacking color, they're tough to see. Goldfish & koi seem to me to make more sense, but to each his own.
