new tank cycling

Postby loweman on Sun Dec 19, 2004 10:43 pm

I'm going to be getting another 150 gallon tank in about a week and wanted a second or third opinion about how I should change over the tanks. I'm closing down my 55 gallon and placing the new 150 in it's location. I can temporarily transfer the fish from from the 55 to the 150. I already have the filters on my 55 that I will be using on the new 150 ( I planned ahead and have been heavily filtering the 55 to get these filters seasoned for the 150) My question is, by using the same gravel and these filters that have been up and running for about 8 months, where do you think the tank cycle will be once I get the new 150 filled and up and running? thanks

You might not have to worry about cycling if you use those filters with the same media etc...personally I think you could just fill that thing up, treat for chlorine etc....get the temp to the same as old tank, check that the pH is right, let it run an hour or two then dump the fish in. (you could wait 24-78hours for extra peace of mind I guess...)

Hi Loweman! Your switch from a 55 to a 150 looks well-planned to me. The only thing about Joe's post I would change is that you don't have to let it run the hour or two -- as soon as the temp is within a couple of degrees, drop in your pets. It'll feel just like home!

p.s. -- We appreciate people like you that plan and ask! Your fish appreciate it, too! --

LOL, Mark I totally agree but wasn't sure if it was politically correct :D
(actually didn't want to come back and answer posts like but should I let it the filter run for some time before putting them in?...) As far as oscars, I admit I've dumped them in completely uncycled tanks before and they did fine....sshhhhh don't tell ;)

cichlidfish, what!? the shame the shame :D

Actually I did that not long ago with my oscar and he wasn't a happy fellow, but he survived and we made it through.

I just moved my 75 from work to home and all went smooth, I didn't clean anything other than rinsing the rock a little because of some spilled pond soil that was sticking to the rock once I emptied it, I kept the biowheels and filtering wet like Mark told me to do and so far so good, the fish seem right at home and were ready to eat the same evening that I moved them.

Oh BTW, thanks to all you guys that are here for advice when we need it, it is truely appreciated. :bravo:
