I am working on designing a application with C/C++ it will be like a cichlid encyclopedia. I am using MS Visual C++ but I dont know where to start LOL. I want the cichlid information to be dynamically created from a database. What type of DB do I use? Where should I start when making a application like this.

Cichfreak, you are probably gonna have to use MS Access, aslong as it's not going to be huge, you should be alright and it should be the easiest to program with VB and C++. I know how to use VB, however the programing langauge I was taught was Ada, so even though i would like to help you out, i probably can't much, however i could design the DB, using VB or just the Form Wizard in Access.

Microsoft has a kind of free version of ms sql called MSDE 2000 for desktop and I think it can be embedded into applications. Anyway that's probably a little too complex for you right now, so yes I agree with using MS access. And yes Visual Basic is definitely easier than C++ but C++ will create considerably more robust applications. For your project Visual Basic would be fine. You may want to look into C# languange and/or XML, of course you can do the same thing on the web with php and mysql.

What I am trying to do is create something like this http://www.cichlidinfo.com/database/ on CD-ROM I found a place that I can sell it and everything. I just got the whole Visual Studio yesterday. I like VB but I have no clue how to use it. I made my database is access (well the structure anyway). I was playing around with VB and I found the VB application wizard to be great for what I am trying to do. But when it asks about a datasource and I try to give it my access database it says it cant read the format! It looks for a .mdb file and my database is cichlids.mdb so my wont it work? Could I send my DB to someone and you can go through the app wizard? This is confusing. is there any tutorials for this type of thing? Will i need to learn a lot of the VB language?
