This is probobly a question for the Aussies on the board but has anyone had any experience keeping these fish?? i have seen a few pics of them and i think i might get one, Does anyone know what size they can get to and water conditions they like? maybe what would be the minimum tank size etc??

Thanks

Mick.

I dont think this would make a very good aquarium fish. For a while you could keep it in a brackish water setup but eventually it looks like you would have to turn it into a full blown salt setup from what info I found on the web. I have included a snippet from one of the pages. They get 1.2 meters long which is a damn big fish almost 4' in length at adult size.
Introduction

Jacks inhabit mangrove estuaries, inshore and offshore reefs from Kalbarri northwards.

Mostly, young fish and small adults are found in estuaries with the more mature fish moving out to sea and occupying the reefs. Jacks have been known to live more than one hundred kilometres inland.

Scientific Information

Growing to a size of 1.2 metres and weighing over 10kg, these fish are mostly caught by recreational anglers much smaller than this with a good fish being 3kg.

Worldwide, Jacks are found throughout the Indo-Pacific region as well as the Red Sea. In Australia, they inhabit rivers from NSW through Queensland, the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Northern Territory into Western Australia as far south as the Ashburton River System.

Scientists do not fully understand their life cycle but they are believed to spawn in estuaries. They feed primarily on small fish and are related to red bass, moses perch and spanish flag.

Lutjanus argentimaculatus

I have heard of people keeping these as they are supposed to be easy to keep and while they can get to one metre or 10kg, the Aussie ones usually stay significantly smaller 1 to 3kg.Also the aussie ones can be found 100kms inland.
The only thing is that due to their territorial attitudes they are best kept alone .

I love eating them with lemon juice Image
