can anyone tell

Depends on what species, and what age,  Some are relatively esay, some are not.

this is approx 3-4 month old jaguar. i was just wondering if anyone could sex this fish from the photo. thanks.      im clueless but i think itsa male i dunno 

No sure way that I know of other than venting.  Like many CA cichlids, the dorsal fins can be longer and pointier.  Some say the males are more distinctly patterned.  That's are just an "educated guess" method though, and not to be totally depended upon.
