laws/law inforcers outta control ? again?

Postby stilllearnin on Sun Jun 29, 2003 8:10 pm

Unfortunately I missed the colombus reptile show yesterday( a rareity for me)
But I got some details, from other people- on a raid on the show

Ohio members might be interested in this story, since a few statements and supposed laws were brought up? - other people may also want to check this out since it was suppoedly mostly federal agents quoteing ohio laws ? (that aren't in the book)

- anything not native to ohio must have a health certificate  that could mean, fish, birds, dogs, cats, horses the whole nine yards! NOONE has found this written in any law book yet,but amphibians and reptiles were confiscated yesterday in colombus under this "supposed law" as well as homes being searched and supposedly other shows and stores may be searched next.

- threatened or endangered animals - must have premits and health certificates - maybe not a bad thing - but none the less not in the book, hard to follow a law you can't read or be told of.
- threatened or endanged animals are prohibited in ohio - anything CITES (or also redlisted for fish) is considered endanged - so even if the animal has a federal and international permit, it's illegal? that would mean green iguanas, ball pythons and tons of eveyday Local pet store things are illegal?

This may not interest some people because it was reptiles, but keep in mind some of the breeders involved do millions of $ in bussiness a year and some are also fish importers, fish breeders, exotic animal, bird breeders,or general wholesalers to petshops - what better way to shut down the "pet trade" then start with the head guys - with no supply = no stores

Here's one
news story that is said to be overexagerated in an attempt to make the reptile/pet market look bad. - So I'm not sure how accurate the story is

Here's a few interesting additional points for us ohio people.

It is illegal to sell, keep without a permit or house over 4 - red eared sliders - even though most local stores do , they're also considered illegal because they're native - BUT they're also listed as introduced

It is illegal (same as above) bullfrogs and tadpoles - even though most local stores do , they're considered illegal because they're native and protected under the reptile and amphibian laws - but your allowed to catch them according to daily bag limites per fishing liscense and bullfrogs even have a season! and can be sold as food  how can they be sold for meat if they're illegal to sell? how can the daily bag limit be higher then the limits imposed by the "reptile and amphibian laws?

it's aslo illegal to catch, sell trade snapping and soft shelled turtles - because they're native and protected under the reptile and amphibian laws - but! they also have bag limits and your allowed to get/have them according to fishing liscense and you can sell them for meat? how can they be sold for meat if they're illegal to sell?

Is this stupid? or meant to trap or trick people ? Anymore some of our animal laws are getting dumber and dumber!
