Is it normal for swordtails to do this?

I really want to have my marigold(male) and pinapple(female) swordtails mate but they always chase each other then other days they'll be "very freindly". Is that normal with a pair like that?

How old are your swordtails? The behaviour you mentioned is absolutely normal, as the others said, but I was just thinking of one of my females which turned out to be what we call a "late male". Always looked like a female, and then began to change his appearance when I had him about 4 months. Not uncommon, but I still find it interesting.

You can be sure you have a female when she slightly becomes more rounded, showing she's "pregnant". In general, swordtails should be kept as 1 male with 2 to 4 females, but should be no problem in your case. Good luck!

(wrong forum here, though)

I geuss i have had them both about a month now, but i don't kno how old they are. I did also saw some fry in my tank...but i dont kno who they belonged to...! I think they got sucked up the filter.
10g 2swortails 2platys 3frogs 3plecos 1catfish 6tetras and 2angelfish(hoping it will take a long time for them to get big so some other fish might die and make room!)

TigerOlover, I'm a bit confused now about the user names ...

But one thing: I'd get a bigger tank ASAP - no, two! Your tank is much too small even for swordtails, not to speak of angelfish. And the plecos and catfish might get too large soon, depending on the species. Also, platies and swordtails prefer hard water with alkaline PH, whereas tetras and angels like it soft and a bit acidic.

The fry you saw were probably young platies or swordtails, they might be got eaten by their parents or the other inhabitants.

It's IMHO not a good idea to mix platies and swordtails, or different breeds of either of them, if you ever considered to give the young ones away. They can crossbreed and produce hybrids nobody wants.

If you want to keep all that fish, I'd get a big tank for the angelfish and tetras and perhaps catfish, and another for the lifebearers and frogs. Swordtails are fast and active swimmers and need more room. Else I'd only keep the platies and frogs and perhaps plecos (if they are small sized) and find a good new home for the others.

Sorry to have no better news.

Oh, I'm just thinking this could have been a late April Fool's joke. If yes, you got me Image
