Is there any discoloration to the lump? Is it like an open wound/sore, or is it just a lump? You discribe it as looking like a pimple.. does it have a head like a pimple?

The only thing I can come up with is it may be a type of bloat. I know many african cichlids can't tolerate proteins, and live solely off vegetable matter. And if they eat to much protein they can get bloat... this is really the best I think I can do with out more info on what the lump really looks like. Also maybe Tony can help as he keeps africans and I dont, so he might have some insight on this.

Sounds like malawi bloat. Unfortunatly its Pretty lethal so you are best to seperate the affected ones in a hospital tank. You can treat with a broad spectrum antibioitic which may help.
If they are too far gone I would personally put them down rather than have them suffer.(sorry)
Electric yellows should be fed mainly vegetable flakes. They can be fed more protein flakes than other africans but I would stick to African flakes or simullar. I have electric yellows and they live on spirulina micro pellets daily and a "few" blood worms once a week for that tiny bit of extra protein they need.

There is no discoloration, the lump is the same yellow color as the body and it doesn't look open or damage.I feed them in the mornings vegetable pellets with some flakes for cichlids and in the afternoon protein pellets with some flakes again.
