I'm new and i need help

Please any advice on this will help a lot I have 2 oscars 3 jack dempsey's a pleco and an armored catfish in a newly set up 55 gallon tank before they were all in a 20 and were moved down to my 55 this morning but i've had it set up for almost 2 weeks now with feeders they were fine before i left for work but when i got home about 5 minutes ago the oscars and dempsey's are sitting at the other side of the tank opposite the filter and will not come away from the top of the water they are just floating up there gasping for air all the pet stores are closed right now except for walmart to get anything to treat them my pleco and my armored catfish are fine what should i do.

first, i hope u kno that u have WAY too many fish in this tank and that the fish wont get along. i dont kno what is wrong with them but for now add some aquarium salt, raise the temperature to about 82 degrees, and if u can get any use some melafix. also since they are stressed out you could add some stress coat if you have not done so already. that should help atleast until one of the experts replys.

ok dude i'm a rookie what's melafix and stress coat can i buy that stuff at walmart they aren't over crowded cause right now the oscars are only 3 inches long and the dempsey's about 1 and a 1/2 and they seem to get along i don't know i need a bigger tank when i have the money and the other thing is is my filter good enough for aereation or do i need an aereator cause mine took a shit and now i don't have one but i can go buy one i dunno. thanks for the advice so far more would be greatly appreciated oh yeah and about the salt water thing this is a fresh water aquarium i'm confused about what you mean

I bought pretty much everything you said the aquarium salt, melafix, stresscoat as well as an aereator, and within a half an hour of adding those things they are all fine now and are breathing normal and moving about the tank in a normal fashion thanks much again I appreciate it
