I have a New fish, there not really <>

Hi. I just got a new Cichlid, because one of mine recently died. I had two Oscars, and now I have one Oscar and my new Chocolate Cichlid. She’s about 1/4 of my Oscars size, Sal. He’s about 10in. He hasn’t hurt her at all, he's a really good tempered fish. But there not really bonding like there not pals, and that’s why I got her, was to keep Sal Company. Should I just give them time? Though that’s all I can do. Do you think it's because they’re not the same size/kind of cichlid?

You need to give it time. The combination of Chocolate Cichlid and Oscar is a classic one and seems to work. Both Chocolate Cichlids and Oscars seem to build "emotional" ties to tankmates after time. I have a book called "Handbook of Tropical Aquarium Fishes" written by Herbert Axelrod where he describes in detail his experience keeping these two species together, and it's quite comical. Anyway, my advice is to simply allow some time to pass and I think it will work. --Mark

Thanks Mark, that really helped, I was really worried they would never get along, I also think that sounds like a cool book to cheak out, I love reading anything so i'm sure I would like it.

You're welcome. One thing, though, while the Chocolate is still small keep a close eye on the Oscar -- Sometimes they can get a little aggressive to smaller tankmates when you least expect it. Chocolate Cichlids are vvvveeeerrrryyyy beautiful fish, they have subtle but extremely pretty colors. As adults they are a little more aggressive than a normal Oscar, and they are diggers -- they love to mow around in the aquarium gravel. Quite a personality. --Mark
