Homemade rocks???

Postby Klair on Sat Mar 16, 2002 5:56 pm

I have tons (literally) of beautiful river-rock and would like to build a rock formation to put in my 55-gallon tank. I am needing some details on how to prepare my rocks and what kind of adhesive to use. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks In Advance,
Klair

I would just wash the rocks a liitle(make shure thier clean)then boil them for a while, and as for the adhiesive use 100% silicone. I did the same thing in my 55. Hope that helps

people say to boil or to bake them for a while as CK sayd. also, people say to put them in a bleach solution, but i wouldnt recommend it unless the rocks are really smooth so the bleach cant hide in some place.

When I made a cave in mine I used the silcone you buy at lps's to reseal your tank. I heard it stays durable better under water then normal 100% silicone Image

if you can i would definitely boil them as it cant hurt. try and stay away from the bleach deal since it is possible for the bleach to possibly soak into something and then will contaminate the water you put it into. if all else fails and you cant boil them i would put them in a bucket treated with salt water or medicated water to try and get any harmful bacteria off them. you shouldnt have any problems but its always better to be safe than sorry.

Just curious....Don't some of the self car wash places on the rinse cycle have a clear coat chemical in it so you don't have to dry off your car? I know mine does. Just boil them to be safe...
