alright, my brother and I have recently purchased two oscars. One is a tiger and the other is an albino, I guess. what I need to know is some general tips and techniques. And yes, just like all the pet stores tell me I know that they will get big. Also if you guys have any little tricks that have worked for you I'd love to know those too.

Thanks! Image

Feed a good, diverse diet, pellets, live feeders, shrimo, even flakes now and then. Keep your water and tank really clean and "handle" your aquarium alot so your Oscars get used to hands in their house. I have 4 Oscras all over 10", 2 of them are 13 inches long and can be quite aggressive. I keep my tank at about 80 degrees. Oscars like to uproot plants so I suggest decorating with rocks. Good luck!

I agree...decorate with rocks unless you feel like replanting then every couple of days...Also, if you are going to eventually add new fish to your tank with your oscars, the sooner the better! My 12 inch oscar recently got a pleco, and won't leave him alone. I'm about to redecorate the the tank and hope it helps. He's been practically alone all of his life, he's had a few small fish in with him other than feeders when he himself was small, but he eventually ate them. Image

Try to keep a variety of diet because once they learn to prefer something, it's very hard to get them to eat anything else. Pellets have lots of good nutrients and feeders help them grow quickly. I prefer Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets, they don't shred or cloud the water, and they are great for the color of the fish!

Good Luck and congrats on your new family members! They will develop lots of personality!
