It's most likely what we call an Algae Bloom, algae growing in the water. The solution is elegant: Put three or four airstones at one end of the aquarium, turn off the aquarium lights, and cover the aquarium for 4 days with a dark blanket. Your fish will be fine without food or light for this relatively short period. Without light, the algae bloom dies. Also without light, the algae gives off carbon dioxide -- which is why we put airstones at the end of the tank, to cause a rotation in the water that oxygenates the aquarium. After the fourth day, do daily 50% water changes for about 3 days, and then the problem should be solved. The immediate water changes are necessary to lower the biologic load created by all the dead and decaying algae.
Now for the causes, which need to be corrected: To much light, and/or too much nitrate. Leave the aquarium lights on for less time, or move the aquarium away from the bright window, etc. Or, if the problem is nitrate, do more frequent water changes and make sure you are not overfeeding the aquarium. Good luck! --Mark
