Freshwater Puffers

Virtually all puffers with the exception of perhaps 1 or 2 species are all brackish or saltwater fish. They are almost all born upstream in freshwater areas but as they mature they migrate out towards brackish areas and pure saltwater... this is why you will see "freshwater" puffers and morray eels... both of which will need brackish water as they reach subadult to adult status... their health and longevity can be seriously comprimised if they are left in fresh water for their entire lives

Freshwater Puffers

Postby mommyfish on Fri Apr 12, 2002 7:53 pm

Zyla, thanks to lots of help from Adam & Convict Kid, there is a lot of good info about Tetraodon nigrifilis, formerly Tetraodon fluviatilis at www.worldcichlids.com under general aquaria, puffer salinity. Mine are very small, less than an inch and were in freshwater at the lfs, so I kept them in freshwater. After a long discussion in the chatroom the other night, I decided to add 1 tsp. instant ocean per gallon. They are doing fine and seem to have adjusted without any problems. I had been having trouble getting them to eat anything but live brine shrimp, but now they are eating frozen bloodworms & today I gave them ghost shrimp that they devoured in no time! So far they don't fight among themselves. I'm getting a bigger tank ready for them now. Also looking for snails. Anybody know if you can buy small snails for food on-line? All my lfs has are the larger mystery snails. Candace

Freshwater Puffers

Postby zyla1969 on Fri Apr 12, 2002 8:12 pm

Thanks for the link. It's currently under construction, but I put it in my favorites and will keep checking back.

When I went to work today for feeders, I noticed that one of the puffers had a hunk taken out of it's rear end!! One of the others must have really chomped it, because that's all that was in that tank. I brought him home to see if I could heal him up, but I don't think he is going to make it. I feel horrible for him. Right behind is butt, looks like someone sliced him with a really sharp knife almost to his backbone. He acts fine, but is soooo thin!! Image Image Image
OHHHHHH, I just looked, and he ate a piece of crab bite food!! That's good. I just gave him some more, and he's eating. Yayyyy!! I am giving melafix. Any other ideas??

Thanks again,

Zyla
