I was going to upgrade my filtration system to a Fluval 404, but I called Big Al's Online to see why the Eheim was roughly $100 more. This is basically what they had to say:

The only thing fluval has over Eheim would be the simplicity of cleaning. Its just easier to clean then the Eheim.
Eheim is far superior in biological filtration and will last as long as your tank will if not more. The only part he has really sold for the Eheim was a prop shaft because the person broke it while cleaning it. He also said you WILL replace parts on the Fluval roughly once a year. They just do not hold up againt Eheim filters. Its really worth the extra money up front in the long run.

So, I would like to hear from people who use or have used one or both of these filters. Give us the part number, and the pro's and con's of the system.

I'm about to get a new filter and am trying to decide on the Fluval 404 or the Magnum 350 Pro. Would you guys mind giving the pros and cons for the Magnum also? Thanks!

I am reposting a picture of my filtration system for my soon to be 125g tank
(its now hooked up to a 60g long).

Left side: Eheim 2229 Professional. This is a wet/dry which holds only substrate
in all three trays. The increased exposure to the air allows for maximum disolved
O2 content, it also pulsates as it fills and creates a current (and a tide)
in the aquarium as it fills and drains. It is only 25 watts and VERY quiet,
also 65% more efficient than Fluval. Seems easy enough to clean with the stackable
trays, but I've yet to disassemble the motor housing.

Right side: Eheim 2028 Professional 2. Almost like the 2229 but it is a straight
flow filter and is self priming. This filter allows many combinations of media
for biological, mechanical, and chemical filtration. Wattage is the same as
the 2229.

Each of these filters is rated for a 160g tank with a 277 gph flow rate.
I am very pleased with everything so far and have no regrets or cleaning disasters
to mention.

The prices for these fluctuate incredibly from the LFS to the internet. I knew of the price difference and my LFS was able to discount a bit after I threatened him with a internet purchase.

I paid $295 for the 2229 WITH MEDIA and $240 for the 2028.

You goto be careful if you think you've found a great deal, because the media for the 2229 (substrate) can run more than $60.00 (3 liters at $20.00 each).

$700 dollars here for something similular so I think I will give that a miss unless I win Lotto rob a bank or the kids leave home.

Yeah the time difference is a pain as Im a day ahead of the usa. Internet connections here suck too as its way behind the times compared to other countries. I get a faster downloads from the USA than from most parts in Australia. We have cable here but not a great deal of areas have it yet and it dear as gold to use it.

I really can't say wich is better fluval or eheim, but I do know that the fluval 304 that i recently purchased is the most bad *** filter i have ever owned. its got a big old sponge for all the bacteria to grow on, and has three stacking media trays with two little compartments in each. it comes with enough bio-beads and carbon to fill the whole thing. I got it at my local LFS and the price was good at 157.99, but since they have to compete with the likes of petco and petsmart he gave it to me for 125. And he said the price would be even lower in a month or so, so if you live around portland, Oregon and are looking for a good price on a good filter stop by A to Z pets.

geese sherman i think you got ripped off for you filter cause today i got a fluval 404 filter for 100$$ on sale from 158$$ but yea i do agree i think that the filter is the best i have ever had even tho mine is a little bigger than yours
