flukes

Postby hale5 on Tue Apr 02, 2002 3:32 am

hi, im one of those new guys who just plopped the fish in the tank & decided to take the internet crash course when i suspected it couldnt just be "that" easy. so the fish had to suffer the cycling of the tank, cause i didnt know any better. we figured out we were messin up about 7-10 days in, so they got the ammonia real bad, have done changes daily since & nitrites have just started to drop in the last 2-3 days. i think were about 5-7 days from clean water. with that said, i have been noticing symptoms of flukes. some fish flashing, rubbing against items in tank, & the fish who has shown the most behavioral symptoms has also had scrapes & scale damage. whats the best way to treat this. my wife brought home some aquarium products brand fluke tabs, but it says it CAN affect nitration. i havent done anything about this yet.im not sure what to do here. thanks

in the tank: 2 oscars 2 firemouths 2 pleco 1 pictus cat 1 tinfoil barb. the barb is the one showing the worst symptoms. these are all young fish sharing a 55 right now and are all(except the firemouths) being moved to a 125 that we got today . im starting a fishless cycle as soon as we get this thing set up.

try putting some melafix in the tank and after you finish the treatment add some aquarium to your tank after each water change.

Why would you add an aquarium to your tank?
You meant aquarium salt right?
I don't think that that would do anything for flukes, I would either use the meds that you have now, or take them beck and get some that don't change the nitrates.

The combo of salt and raising the tank temp is the secind best cure for parasites. It causes the parasite to acctually retain the water andthe cells in them explode(you can't see it though)

The secondbest parasite med (ecspecially for tapeworm types) is droncit, acctually sold at vet ofices as a dog wormer.

In salt water a very efective way to rid fish of flukes is to do a "fesh water dip", i suppose that you could do a "salt water dip" with a frsh water fish, but it would only be for a minnute if that so i don't know if it would be as affective. Just some info to help you out, oh and by the way if your fish better? i guess i should have asked that first. Image
