CichlidFish.com - Fish That Think.

This is a new book by Stephen Reebs, a professor of Biology at the University of Moncton, in Canada.  His stated goal with this book was to produce something for advanced aquarists and others interested in fish behavior, who don't have the access to, or patience for digging through all the various scientific papers on this subject.  Entertainingly written, The book is in three main sections:  Sensory Abilities, Cognitive Abilities, and Choosing Abilities.  This book is easy to read, and well worth the time.  One of the interesting bits to me was that many fish are just as vocal as birds, and seem to use these sounds in similar ways.  For instace, Jewel Cichlids have a territorial vocal expression, accompanied by a shaking of the head.  One of the things "they" don't know yet though, is whether the shaking of the head is a discrete action, or something the fish has to do to produce the sound.  Highly recommended!
