fertilization question

Postby john cheyne on Fri Dec 23, 2005 7:14 pm

wondering if the other fish in the tank will affect fertilization of the oscar eggs. they have laid about 15 times now and with no success. i have been told they are male and female.and do not leave each others side. they do not fight at all.only lip lock just before laying the eggs.
the other fish in the tank are one pleco, two cray fish and two brissel nose cat fish.

Q. has anyone ever filmed oscars laying eggs?

And hope you all have a merry christmas and a happy new year.

Other fish affecting the eggs is possible, but I'd say unlikely. Can you expand upon "without success"? Do they fungus? Are they eaten? What exactly happens? What is the water temp? It is possible that you have two females, but that of course isn't the only possibility. It's also possible that the eggs hatch but the wrigglers are being eaten. Nice pic, btw.

Dan covered all the other stuff but :
i have been told they are male and female.and do not leave each others side. they do not fight at all.only lip lock just before laying the eggs.

Two females will act that way also.
Next time they lay look at their "tubes" females have a big one and a males is smaller and thinner.

fertilization question

yes the eggs do have fungus on them after about 48hrs. water temp is around 28 to 30 degrees C. ive been told that they are male and female. they do eat the eggs after fungus has completely covered them . ive noticed that just after the eggs are laid the other oscar will hover over the eggs and twitch and move around and twitch some more.

thankyou for your replies.
