Feeder Fish=No Nutrition?

Postby Mark Stone on Fri Jan 14, 2005 12:03 am

Ive read in at least two other threads that feeder fish have little to no nutritional value to large species like Oscars. I thought they did, but my thinking was based on assumption -- does anybody have any sources, like studies and/or internet websites, that support this? Thx in advance --Mark:cool:

Feeder Fish=No Nutrition?

Here some info I have saved on my computer from a few various sources.
(not my reasearch - just from my saved files ;) )

Total nutrition in a 100 gram sample of a feeder goldfish
Protein = 18% or less (2.5 times less then quality pellets)
Lipids = 5.60 g
Vitamin B = 2.8 mg
Vitamin C = 1.60 mg
Saturated fat = 1.08 grams (5-6 times higher then shrimp, crayfish ,similar items or quality fish food)

thiaminase - HIGH- this is what blocks thiamin absorbtion/breakdown and leads to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Hoefully that helps with what your looking for :confused:

Theres a few USDA studies scattered around online as well as some AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) and AVMJ (American Veterinary Medical Journal - you need a paid subscription for there)

Feeder Fish=No Nutrition?

hi..........in my oppinion. people use feeder fish just for the pure fun of watching predator and prey.which isn't all bad..i mean it happens in real life so its not like were creating a cruel environment for the prey??

i wouldn't possibly dictate to people that useing feeder fish is cruel..because i use live foods when feeding my python.my point is that useing feeder fish is a way of livening up feeding times when we feel neccessary.and as mentioned by stillearnin and mark we pretty much know that feeding quality pellet and ready made foods are generaly better for our fish.and less of a health risk....

...just my general oppinion on this subject..

jay..:) :)
