Everyones first spawn...

Hi all,
just wondering whos bred cichlids before, what were the first type you ever bred? Do you do it for the pure pleasure of it and fun, or money to sell and make a buck?
My first cichlids to breed and only thus far were brichardi neolamprologus, they spawned about 6 times and it was so cool watching there little community grow and thrive in my own lounge room. Such good parents and generations all lived well together, though spawns started shrinking when tank crowded, natures safe gaurd i guess. Ended up using a grow out tank for some of the bigger babies.
Since then my friend now has the pair and im waiting for my Mainganos to breed, which will be interesting because there mouth brooders. Hopefully they will carry to term, not to sure about stripping i know there are pros and cons.
Anyhow just interested in your breeding conquests and what you all managed to get to tango for the first time.

I have bred Red devils, rainbow cichlids, convicts,P Zebras and oscars.
I started doing it for fun and a bit of money (I never made any huge profits)
I unfortunatly recently had to move from QLD to NSW to a much smaller house and no longer have the room like I used to. Up in QLD I had 13 tank setups, now I only have 2 Image

Sounds good Tony you've bred a fair few varieties. With the O's roughly what was the biggest spawn you got?
Katie's got a good pic in the O's section of her fry as you've probably seen. Image
Talk soon Luke.

Unfortuantly my oscar pair have only spawned once and the male ate most of the eggs and fry. I managed to rescue some of the fry but they only survived a few weeks.I think my oscars have weak genes. I have had them for about 4 years and its strange that they have bred only once in that time(They still show all the signs of spawning but nothing ever comes of it)
I think Katie is the oscar breeder guru here lol

Ive had really great success with Red devils though and found the fry to be very hardy and easy to raise.(the parents are really great with them) I used to sell them for $2 to $6 each depending on size.

i used to breed red-top zebras, tangerine zebras and some labeotropheus but i got sick of them being so small and generally crap. Moved onto Red Devils and got a few fry out of my breeding pair until the female killed the male (who would have thought) also bred convicts, but that's nothing to get excited about. I have aspirations to breed Umbriferum now (yes i KNOW how big and angry they get) i have fallen in love with these fish Image

Cool,

Red Devils must be a pretty cool fish to own and breed, are they hard to spawn? Being hardy makes it easier to i suppose.

Funny the O's only spawned once, though if there happy and well looked after which i'm sure they are thats all that matters really.

Umbriferum , now that sounds interesting never even heard of them i'll check em out on the net, good luck with that Dovii.

The only trouble Ihad with red devils was matching a female to the male.. Took me 3 goes but he finally decided to tango. I found them to be exellent parents with their babies. One other thing to be cautious with is after removing the fry the parents will either mate again or the male will try and kill off his mate. For this reason I found it best to leave the fry in the parents tank as long as possible.
At one stage I was up to my armpits in red devil babies and had to a lot of ringing around and legwork etc to sell them around Brisbane.

yeh they breed in very large numbers, don't they! the first fry mine had i tried to keep them all alive (over 500) and as a result i got virtually nothing for them from my local lfs as i had flooded the local market with a fish that not many people want to keep... I was advised by the owner in future to cull the number of fry to be kept alive, and to grow the remaining ones bigger, hence increasing their value. All i know is that the dovii was well fed. after the male died, i got rid of the female. I think the dovii misses the feeders so i have started to breed the convicts now for him. Had two fry out of them in under two months - DAMN they breed!

Cool Brian,

it's good fun breeding the cichlids isn't it. That was bloody quick by the convicts, no mucking around there.

My mouth brooders are as i said earlier Mainganos and there building caves and doing all the pre spawn type things, can't wait.

Speak soon fry.
