Dyed Pleco

My wife came home yesterday w/ what she said was being sold as raspberry pleco. when i 1st heard the name, the fruit reference in the name made red flags go up. she pulled it out of the paper bag & what can i tell you? the thing looked horrible. it was a very artificial looking pinkish raspberry color. didnt take long to see that this was just an albino pleco (common sailfin that ya see everywhere) that was injected. when i took a close look i found that the color of the fish got its darkest shade of red "not pink" on its sides just to the left & right of dorsal & in those areas were 4-6 pin holes all with the color at is deepest red right in the pinhole & all of the color spread from those spots & gets lighter the further from the pin marks it is. i pointed this out to my wife & she got really grossed out by the pin holes. she is out returning it now to get her 11.00 back. i told her to ask them if they spraypaint their dogs & cats, but then thought better. i didnt want to give them any ideas. dying fish is a very cruel proccess and a lot of fish die from it. that is really sad about the pleco Image .i have never seen a albino pleco and i would want a albino pleco more than a pink dyed one that will probably have a very short life. never buy a dyed or injected fish because when u do u r supporting cruelty to animals. Awwwwww, that's horrible. I've never seen or heard of a pleco being dyed, and I hope I never do see one!!

Good for you for taking it back!! That's the best way to say, hey, this stinks!!

The cruelty never ends, does it??!!

i have seen these as well. when i first saw them i rolled my eyes and said, "now i've seen it all!". i couldn't believe the purple, blue and pink plecos in front of me. the ones i saw were albino chocolate plecos (which are fairly inexpensive). sailfin plecos usually go for a decent price, so i'd think albinos would cost even more. i'm guessing the ones you saw were also albino chocolates. it's very sad what these people are doing to the hobby by dying so many fish.

I just saw them the first time today, and guess where. My favorit LFS! Image Must be the new thing to dye plecos, next they'll be dyeing frontosas, and clown knifes. They make a clown knife realy look like a clown.
