Dont want to loose this fish

Postby smithe on Tue Nov 16, 2004 1:48 am

I have a 75 gallon tank . I had a green severum, a green terror, and a tinfoil barb in it. The severum started flashin agaist the rocks and keeping its fins collapsed all the time. Then it lost its appitite and its slime coat appeared to be a little cloudy. I tried many suggestions. Coppersafe, Melafix, Quickcure, fungus cures, massive water changes with no changes. Through this the green terror remained unaffected. The severum died and the tinfoil barb suffered the same fate but much quicker. It has now been several months and i have since added an Oscar and midas cichlid to the tank. The green terror has recently started acting just like the severum was and i don't want to loose him. He is the best fish i have ever owned.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

.
When you treated the fish the first time, did you remove the carbon from your filters if you didn't, then the carbon would remove the meds from the tank before they had a chance to work. I assume you treated the main tank, and didn't use a hospital tank.
It sounds like a fungus, which can be caused by to much ammonia, or even ph levels. Check those, you could try giving the green terror a bath in epsom salts, this can sometime work just as well or better than med's. You could also try treating the fish directly by "painting on the meds". now both these methods do require removing the fish, and adding stress. One last note, using fungus medicines can sometime cause an unbalance in the ammo, ph and nitrites, ect, so it is a good idea to keep an eye on that during treatment, if you don't have a hospital tank.

Dont want to loose this fish

talked to a guy at lfs and he suggested a treatment for flukes. The change already is amazing. He doesn't compress his fins any more and is up front in the tank trying to fight me again. Just like the good ol'days

What are the causes of flukes?

I also have a dumb question what are the points and how are they incured?

I want to take a picture of the green terror should i have the tank lights on or off? should i have the room lights on or off? Should i use a flash? He is a great looking fish

Thanks for your help

Cause's of flukes, they are general introduced to a tank, via another fish ect, poor tank maintance also can lead to it.

Took me a few seconds to figure out "the point's" I am not sure, but there is store where you can spend them....lol.

Try it without the flash, the glass in most case's reflects back the light. I would have as much light directed in the tank as posisble to light up the fish.

Glad you got it under control.
