dead coral?

Postby 2ndgen on Wed Oct 05, 2005 4:57 pm

can anyone tell me if dead coral is bad for having mbunas? i'm just going to have the basic ones in there. i was told that drift wood lowers the ph level, and what i have in there now is ok (1 med size) i've never had to mess with my ph level before when i had my convicts, red devil, and firemouth. i bought some corals off of ebay from someone in PR. here is what i bought:

and this is the description:
NATURAL CARRIBEAN REEF PIECES. These are NATURALLY SUN CURED CORAL REEF, (dead coral ), sAFE FOR all tanks and aquariums. These are ALL NATURALLY FORMED pieces of CORAL REEF, NO brokes, or ruff edges. CORAL helps eliminate CHRONIC PH PROBLEMS, and will help purify the water Bacteria. Its a NATURAL carbonate Buffer.

i hope i didn't get hosed on this

CORAL helps eliminate CHRONIC PH PROBLEMS,
IF you have PH that falls.

Coral raises or helps hold PH on the higher side.
Fine for a mbuna tank.

You might want to set the stuff in a bucket of water for a little while to see if you're going to get any ammonia off of dead stuff on the rock...but other than that, looks like it might have been a decent buy. I've used base rock (which is more or less what you've got there) in my Mbuna tank for as long as I've had 'em.

dead coral?

well i got everything in there and the fish love it. i don't want to say that i have caves galore, but there is definitely at least 10 :D but on a side note, i lost a stripped something and a red zebra  :( this never dawned on me, but they got sucked into my back filter. i bought my setup used, and it didn't have that little extension tube. i asked the guy i bought it from, and he said that the fish will learn not to get too close to it. in the 2 years that i've had that tank, never got one sucked up and i had convicts galore. those suckers kept breeding like crazy. anyway, i had a plastic end cap cover filter thinga ma jig that i just put on there. so now if they get too close, worse that will happen is they will get stuck to it. (i hope)
