Cycling?

Postby mrslimpitt on Sun Jul 20, 2003 6:54 am

Hi all,
Here is another one for you! I set up a 55 gal. 4 days ago. I put in 2 cups of gravel and some media from one of my established tanks. I checked the amm. and nitrite levels this morning, both are 0. Will the tank go through a mini cycle?
Almost forgot:D In the tank I put in 8 1inch fry. Will they be ok? I have more to put in, but I don't want to have the tank got out of whack:confused
Thanx

it'll cycle faster that you put gravel from an est tank in the newer one. what kind of fry are they? even with hardy fish, fry are young and if you really like them, i wouldnt chance putting them in a new tank that hasnt been cycled yet. if you are concerned about your tank going 'out of whack' because of the small fry, i wouldnt worry about the tank, rather the fish instead

Hi dethmunkee,
The tank is doing great! No problems with cycling. The fry that are in the tank are Elec. Yellows. The problem is what to do with the new fry batches:eek: My fish are breeding like crazy;)

wow...ive NEVER ever tried raising africans of anykind (except the biggo buttikoferi i inheritted long time ago for a while)....lol...someday i will tho.

a cup of established gravel wont do much in a 55g....it still needs at least 2 weeks of cycling....itl help...but not much.....instead of gravel....why dont you try using water from an establish tank....like when you change that tank's water...save it and put it in the new tank...and put new water int he old tank....itl speed up faster....i do that all the time....i dont even cycle my tanks now...all i do is fill it up with half "used" water...and half new water...and put a filter from another tank....and juss add fish...they do fine....its like a 50% water change =]

I did take some water from the tank they where in...only about 10 gals. The tank was only a 20 gal. The rest of the water I had to keep in the tank with the rest of the fry.
