cuttings of aquarium plants

Postby v_isa on Mon Jul 22, 2002 10:50 pm

does anyone know much about plants? we sell cuttings of a few standard varieties of plant such as: bacopa, elodia, "dragon's flame" (i think is a marketing name) pennywort, parrots feather, purple temple, etc, but theyre mostly all cuttings. some have roots forming on their stems,, but others are just cut. does any one know the relative success rate of cuttings for planting out?

Ive never had any probs getting cuttings to grow and root. Plants like elodia will grow planted or just floating around the tank.

Im no expert with plants but with quite a few plants that I have cut back and replanted the offcuts, have done well .Most plants as V_isa says are sold as cuttings, unless of course you buy them as established potted plants
I believe amazon swords do better when split at the roots to create more plants. Thats the way I do them anyway.

yeah i think some plants have rhizomes or whatever they're called and can only be grown from a split root system, like sweet potatoes or something! I'm glad to know that this cutting caper is legitimate... some customers some back and tell me theirs just dies or the fish ate it.... i tell them you need a light on your tank!!! Image and that's also what fish do (eat plant), and that they'd be the same, if some one only fed them flakes every day!
