i found a place that sells 3 convicts that are 3" each for 5 bucks. is that a good price for them?

I'm not sure I am reading your post right, but if it is 3 fish for $5 then that is a pretty good deal, if it is $5 a fish then that might be a little expensive but not outrageous for convicts. Usually they sell for around $2-3 apiece.

If it is a 3 for $5 deal be careful not to get 2 males and a female... 2 females and a male is a much better combo though one female might get beat on when the other two are spawning. A bigger tank (30 gallons) would be a good solution to this problem

not sure why they'd sell them in 3's, unless they're hoping you'll get a total of 6 to have 3 pairs. however, 3 for $5 is a pretty good price.
