i read something a while back that sayd convicts can live without a heater. the tempeture would be around 68 degrees...can it be possible?

I dont know.. I have never read anything that stresses they need heat, but being tropical cichlids I wouldnt think they would breed as frequently if at all in lower temperatures... usually breeding is triggered by increases in temp, so my opinion would be they would get aggitated and not spawn.

Ive had them without heaters before. Its ok in warmer weather but with winter time they are prone to white spot(ich) which a tank of mine got when a cool change drop the temp all of a sudden. They do breed without a heater but the fry dont last long without one.

No where does it say we humans need a heater either. . .But that does not mean we are going to disconnect our heat. Convicts can survive with out a heater in warm weather, but they really do need one for optimal growth and health. The best way to keep a steady temp. year round is with one.

all of my tanks are unheated, but i keep the door shut to the room they're in and the temp stays in the upper 70's. sometimes, when it gets very warm, i sweat when i go into the fish room. oh well, i'm saving electricity at least.
