Convict morphs?

Postby MidasKnight on Wed Mar 17, 2004 1:05 pm

I saw some convicts in the LFS yesterday that were a bit unusual in their markings. They were white background, but the stripes weren't all vertical nor were they all black. The first stripe on the shoulder area was diagonal as were a few others. Also, some stripes were black and some were sort of a light olive drab color.

Does this sound familiar?

Also, if I want to breed non-standard convicts, can I (should I) mix in standard convicts to strengthen the gene pool or just get several families of the kind I want?

Lastly, if I had a blue calico and a standard, would I get faded blues, or some of each, or what? Would the above mentioned convict be a good or bad pattern to mix in?

I've also forgotten the status on the Honduran Red Points so I'll go back and read that post again. I'm thinking they are a legitimate species if they can breed, but they may or may not be convicts.

Sound like commons bred to golds - back and forth, happens alot in the hobby

You usually (on average) get about a 45/45% split and then a few that take on the characteristics of both

I was wanting some Marbled cons to breed due to you can not find any around here, and U should be able to find homes for them quickly. I also found a convict like Yellow cichlid that get to 6" that I really would like to get. They are dull Yellow/black and look just like a convict. the OKC Aquarium club member has them and told me he would get me some soon. He sells his for a $1.00 apeice.
BUT can you breed brother and sister and not have any deformed fry???
Or does it matter in the fish world on breeding Kin??

I have heard that it doesn't matter as immediately as it does with humans, but it will matter a couple of generations down the line.

Yes I thought it might not. Its's not like fish in the wild go: hey, your my sister! can't nest with you!! But I have heard of many who have deformed fish from theirs that they got from someone else. Brother sister- deformed fry.. But how long has this strain been interbreed is the question. We don't know.. Take My Midas, I got then at the same place but at differnt times. But could they be related? Don't know.. Fish store don't know. they get theirs from a dealer who gets them from someone else and on down the line it goes.. But I know my fry are in great shape, no deforms. You still want some right?? Remember you can still give them away or sell the ones you don't want. And I have some more that are hatching today. Still interested??

Yes I am having probs with PM. thiers hardly anything in it. figures.. i deleted lots but still not go..

I think I need to wait on the Midas' until I'm more experienced. I'm also not yet ready (dont' have the other tank set up) and my buddy is driving up this weekend.

I'll try to be patient and do this fish keeping thing right.

Thanks anyway though!

These guys are not going to be a big tank issue for at least 8 mos down the road. they are only 8 weeks and 1/3 inch right now. But I understand. Maybe next time..

 Archocentrus cutteri ? If so I'll have some babies shortly ,might give you an option for unrelated stock ;)

I got those too ;) once it warms I can ship them - I have two bloodlines of marbled cons (white marbleds).
Also have 1 or 2 other non-related adult males that'll be going to so I can make some room for some other species.
(I'll have Archocentrus centrarchus babies by then too :D )

is that 1 to 3 inches or a third of an inch?

Hey, thats a 1/3 of a inch. or a 1/4 of an inch. some are bigger than others. AS for the cutteri, I don't remeber the name. But will find out. On your convicts, sure I'll take some find out on shipping and what you want for them. Zip: 73064. What is the common name of the other ones so I don't have to look them up?? I would like to get smaller Amer.Cichlids to go in a 55 gal tank, that get along.(yea right!) I always have dividers on hand for that onry ones.

I'm getting around 20 Honduran Red Point from the LFS dude whenever they get big enough (and no shipping :D ). I still need to find out what it would cost for me to get some of still's marbled or his buddy's blue marbled convicts.

ARGH!!!! So many cool fish, so little money for them to devour!
