Convict Cichlids

Postby Lillian on Tue Apr 17, 2001 10:50 am

I have a female pink convict and a male zebra convict in a 15 gal tank. A couple of days ago, they upset an ornament and then began digging a hole under it. The hole is now about 3 inches across in an almost perfect circle, right down to the glass. They have begun to show some mating behaviour, at least that is what I assume it is. ( She has orange on her belly and he flares his gills when he is near her. What other behaviour will be displayed ) My question is, why would they do this, when they already had a cave (flower pot on its side, with plants in front) and when can I expect to see eggs? Is there anything special I should do for them? Also, I have a small chinese algae eater in the tank, should I take it out?

Like oscars they like a cleared surface to lay eggs on. Although I dont own convicts myself (yet) you wont have to wait long for eggs and fry.
