Convict cichlids

Postby Discus on Wed Oct 04, 2000 2:51 pm

I have a pair of Convict cichlids and I know for sure that they are male and female, the female got lately an orange-pink hue on her belly and a blue hue on her lower fins, does it tells that she is ready to spawn?
if yes, when?

Oh yea, she's just about ready to go at it. The male on the other hand may not. But it doesn't take that much to get him ready(go figure) How big/old are your fish? Usually the convicts are relatively easy to breed/spawn. They mature sexually at an earlier age than most cichlids. But they are usually primed when they hit about 3-4" and there diets and H2O conditions play an important role in it also. But like I said they are quite easy to get a good batch out of them and they do make quite nice parents. Now remember that the first few times they breed they may not have a successful batch but once time passes and they are an appropriate pair, you will want to seperate them cause you are running out of room to put the babies. Also try to keep them a Generation 1 pair, meaning don't let the babies spawn with each other(generation 2) cause they will given the chance. [Sigmond Freaud(sp.)] It doesn't produce as superior a fish and the colors and birth defect may not be what you want in a fish, etc etc. So good luck. And let us know the specs. on your fish

Hi Discus,

With convicts, don't worry about anything, as long as there's a male and female and they have water to swim in, they will breed....and yes when female's orange belly gets nicely orangish she is "ripe", they are very good parents don't trouble yourself with doing anything special for the fry...

Oh yea...sometimes you have to remove the female if the male starts protecting the fry. That's odd though, usually the smaller of the two will just get chase off, not killed. Were they in a smaller tank Jay?

You need to have some hiding places for the female etc.. or just bigger tank. And yea I've had to take the female out for a while also....

Well, I had a pair of convicts in about a 2gallon tank, they had fry etc....actually there were 2 females in the tank and one male Image I had to take the female that laid the eggs out since the male "hooked-up" with the other chick and they both started torturing the female that just laid the batch of eggs....fry hatched etc....o yea Jay saw on another post you were wondering about getting into Admin/mOderator forum, you tried to get in with your password and couldn't? Also it is strange, after you make a post it should not say gues anymore it should know you are Jay. You may have lost your "cookies" Image try this link www.cichlidfish.com/cgi-bin/bbcgi/ubbmisc.cgi?action=setprefs
