Colored Oscars

Postby S42K on Fri Oct 27, 2000 10:11 am

Hello I was just really wondering on how long colored oscars hold there color. Such as strawberry oscars or the new blue oscars? I just recently bought a strawberry oscar around 2" in length. I saw the blues on a cover of a magazine and should have bought it but can no longer find it <.=( Just curious if anyone knows how long these fish hold there coloration as I am sure they are died.... Thanks...

Hi,

I really don't have any experience with dyed oscars but I would estimate that it should last for a couple months or so.....I havn't even seen those dyed oscars.....

Well I first saw the Blue Oscar inside Tropical Fish magazine I believe it was. It came w/ a 2001 calander and for one of the months it had a Blue Oscar. Very similar to the Blue Jack Dempsey which is not died. I know of one person who sells a "true" Blue jack dempsey and if someone else is selling it make sure it came from Jeff Rapps of Tangled up in cichilds. If not chances are it is fake blue dempsey. This is why I asked about the Blue Oscar. Wasn't sure if it was died or if it is a "true" blue oscar. Thanks for the help...

they DO have a true blue oscar that they have been working on for the last couple years, but it is very rare. Joe, maybe your thinking of a chocolate cichlid? and a marble oscar is another name for the blue oscar

They have not been working on the blue oscar for a couple of years, it was an unfixed "sport" in the 60's, which was lost(thus unfixed) and it was called "purple" then. A marbled has light markings as well as purplish ones.

So is the blue convict dyed or is it in the genes?

Just out of curiosity how are fish dyed anyways? Is there any special place to look or go online for a gene inherited marble, blue, blueberry Oscar?

S42k, I don't think so, and unfortunately most are just that, color dyes and not hereditary. They inject the fish under the skin, not sure on the specifics...

Purple and marbled oscars are created by specific breeding. Bluberry oscars are created by a process that would be similar to a human being tattooed with a needle the size of a pencil. There is no place to look for the "gene" online because there has been minimal work done on the genetics involved in oscar coloration and the breeders in Taiwan aren't talking!

Yeah cichlidfish is right about the injecting
part.I also heard a rumor from my old local
fish store that there distrubtor feeds the fish a pill for color changes.

To tell you the truth, I really never really cared THAT much about color and how 'pretty' a fish was. I just like fish that are smart and have some character and curiosity. It might be the most beautiful fish but if it's as dumb as a goldfish,(although you can find dumber) I don't want it.
