Well according to my LFS the coloring last only couple months. One said 6 months. I also heard that the Blue Jack Dempsey is a hybrid fish. Its mixing with another and I am trying to find out which now.

So actually they just take an "albino" and shoot him up with inks? Sounds like a very tedious job don't you think?? Hummm, some people have too much time on there hands!

Well its done in the Philippians or Taiwan from my understanding. Work over there is hard to find so... I didn't know how they dyed the fish until now...

I can just see those sweat shops, bunch of people being whipped to inject fish...at 10cents/hour.

The new issue of Tropical Fish magazine has done a story on Blue Oscars and painted fish. The blue Oscar is a dyed fish. By the time it hatches from a egg, it is placed into another tank filled with a dye. The fish absorbs this dye and should last roughly 6 months.

Painted fish such as painted glass fish or tetras are actually poked with a needle to the equivalent to the size of a pencil needle for a human. Also only color last for 6 months. The wounds from the needles are left to the mercey of diseases.

Excellent story and talks about shops that are not learned and tells people that they feed them flake foods that bring out the color change. But in actuallity it only brings out the real color of the fish. Another LFS said it all depends on your aquarium setup in terms of heat and ph as to the colors.

Also did a good story on the Red Parrot fish as to what it really is and where it came from etc.

Wow, pretty nice....thanks for the post, I'd think they should be for real since can't think of how you can make them gold by dying them.....maybe you can find out how they bred that color......

aznboy_jx,

No particular fish store will carry them. Most mail order or go to wholesalers and what they have is what they get if they like their selections.
Just do searches using all search engines online. Ask your LFS to get one in. I know many LFS do not support or choose to carry colored fish due to them only holding their coloring for 6 months. But perhaps if they come across one they will pick it up special for you. I know my LFS will do that >.=)

I've got a question for any body that thinks they know the answer, I bought an oscar a while back and the guy at the pet store said it was a SNOW OSCAR. Now I might be wrong being new to this whole oscar deal but I'm guessing that it's only an albino. So if you could tell me what the heck it really is I'd be delighted. Either way it was a good price.

And yes, it does have pink/red eyes. But on the tips of some of the fins there is sort of grayish brown coloring, it's got a spot over it's right eye the same color!

just thought you'd like to know. Image

I'd also like to know if there is anything besides the color that sets albinos apart from the rest of the oscar crowd.

Nothing, i know of, just like in humans, they're missing some pigment....basically if they are "complete" albinos they dont produce any of the pigment at all....so basically depends on amount of melanin etc....know what makes a blond, blond? yep they ALSO have "less" of something........what might that be? I had talked to Jeff R. about these beautiful Gold Oscars and he said "I am no longer breeding the golds in my hatchery (for now). They are not a hormoned or dyed fish. I may still be able to bring some in, but not until after the first of the year."
